HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The fifth Dancing with Our Stars event took place this weekend at the Alhambra, where eight couples danced the night away for a good cause. The popular event raises money for the Pennyroyal Arts Council and Sanctuary Inc. in Hopkinsville, and this year they exceeded their goal by raising $91,239.50.

The theater was packed with supporters dressed their best to watch well-known local couples try their hand at different dance styles. Politicians, business owners, church officials, teachers, and many others have been working hard for weeks with local instructors to perfect their moves and compete for a trophy while raising funds.

“Your support is changing lives every day,” said Heather Lancaster with Sanctuary Inc., a Hopkinsville crisis center for victims of sexual assault.

“This is such an important fundraiser for both of our organizations,” said Margaret Prim with the Pennyroyal Arts Council. “Heather and I are always so overwhelmed when we work with our celebrity dancers with the amount of work they put in and the comradery they build.”

Teams were able to raise funds ahead of the big night, but the majority of the money was raising during the show while people cast votes for their favorite performances. The theater was alive with cheers from supporting friends and family as a wide range of dances were shown including hip-hop, the waltz, and the foxtrot with lifts and impressive routines analyzed by a panel of judges.

Carter Hendricks, Cody Noffsinger, Francene Gilmer, and Alissa Keller excitedly gave high marks for each team based on stage presence and overall skill. Joe and Tierra Leavell took the Judges Choice trophy home after impressing with their high energy hip-hop routine. Mary Anne and Caleb were named Online Fan Favorite and lit up the stage with a Blues Brothers dance.
