OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Oak Grove residents and city officials joined on May 9 to unveil the stone marker of the city’s time capsule. Buried during the 50th anniversary celebration in September 2024, there is now a marker installed outside of the Oak Grove Community Center where people can visit the time capsule site until it is dug up in 50 years.

During the ceremony, Mayor Jackie Oliver addressed dozens of community members in attendance, speaking about the comradery of living in a small town. Council members Jean Leavell and Janet Edwards also spoke about the progress the city has made, and the positive rallying of community members during the recent flood.

Edwards told Christian County Now that local residents, churches, and businesses contributed to the time capsule last year and a variety of items were put inside. Some people chose to put in a photo of the current President, a copy of The Eagle Post was included, along with several sealed letters from residents.

“We had challenge coins from soldiers, a couple prayer requests from different churches, a pair of miniature boxing gloves to remind everyone to fight the good fight,” said Edwards, who continued to list other items. “A letter from a 6-year-old predicting what the world will look like in 50 years, a list of prices for cars, food, gas and houses.”

Also in the capsule is photos of deceased 10-year-old Zachary Jones, and several pictures of the current Oak Grove City Council and city sites.
