HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A new family-owned restaurant has opened up in Hopkinsville, welcoming the community in for delicious comfort food and classic flavors. Ma’s Kitchen was serving hungry customers bright and early when they opened on March 25, with the goal of serving up homestyle flavors fast.
Cindy Shelton is the owner of the city’s newest eatery, with the additional daily support of her family. “It’s me, with my husband, my son, and my daughter,” Shelton told Christian County Now. “It’s a family thing we are doing together.”
Having gained her cooking skills from her mom, Shelton and her family are adapting classic southern dishes in a cafeteria style set up. Currently opening at 5 a.m. for breakfast and staying open through lunch and dinner, people can grab biscuit sandwiches and pancakes in the morning or hold out for their selection in the afternoon and evening.
Menu and supporting local businesses
On the menu people will find classic Kentucky staples to load up their plates including fried chicken, salmon patties, cabbage, and turnip greens, along with mashed potatoes and Salsbury steak. Other items like barbecue chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, mac and cheese, brown beans, and fresh hot rolls are also on the menu. Her personal favorite plate is meatloaf with collard greens and cornbread.
Those with a sweet tooth will be happy to find an array of desserts made from scratch daily like brownies and old-fashioned peanut butter and meringue pie.
“There wasn’t anything like it in Hoptown,” said Shelton the day before their grand opening. She hopes that their homemade and delicious menu will attract people who are looking for a new type of flavor in the area. Although this is her first time owning a restaurant, she already has deep local connections with the community from her experience operating a produce stand on Lafeyette Road.
That previous experience opened her eyes to the importance of supporting local, having gained a community of patrons who are excited to follow her onto her next venture in the restaurant world.
New patrons can find Ma’s Kitchen at the Pennyrile Marketplace 3022 Fort Campbell Boulevard. For more information call (270) 632-1112 or find them on the Ma’s Kitchen Facebook page.
