HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Men 2 Be is a local non-profit organization founded by LaDessa Lewis. She strives to empower young men in the community to reach their full academic, social, and personal potential. With support from her husband, volunteers, and mentors, Lewis has created a powerful brotherhood among black youth in Hopkinsville.

“With Men 2 Be we are giving them the necessary tools so that they can make sound decisions,” said Lewis. “We want them to know that we’re in their corner and we’re rooting for them.”

Inspired by the nationwide movement following the death of George Floyd in 2020, Lewis decided to extend that to Hopkinsville to show local kids that their lives matter, and they are seen by the community.

“It made me ask myself why black males aren’t valued as a human being,” said Lewis. “I found that we were blaming kids for a lot of things that they weren’t being taught anymore.”

The organization provides mentors and role models to fill in the gaps for youth to create a solid foundation they may not have elsewhere. Lewis explained they are trying to teach valuable life skills to help the boys grow into well rounded men.

Tutoring, field trips, personalized mentors, Man Cave Mondays, and continued encouragement for academic achievements are a fraction of what Lewis arranges for the boys. She finds this support has helped change negative behaviors and provides a positive outlet for youth in the area. Her ultimate goal is to make sure everyone is heard and knows their life matters.
