HOPKINSVILLE, KY – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to begin a multi-year construction project on KY 107 (Lafayette Road) in Christian County early next month, which will improve safety for motorists in the area of Lover’s Lane as traffic is expected to increase with the Christian County High School.
The project includes improving the grade and elevation of KY 107 at its intersection with Lovers Lane to provide better line of sight for motorists and adding turn lanes to KY 107 and Lovers Lane at this intersection, according to a news release from KYTC.
This has been a topic of conversation by the Christian County Fiscal Court and Christian County Public Schools since construction started at the new CCHS, which is located at the end of Lovers Lane on the newly named Tiger Way.
The road department has been preparing plans to improve the road from the start of construction of the school in the area, but challenges arose due the nature of the road. A portion of it is under the jurisdiction county, a portion is in the city, and each end has state roads attached.
Construction timeline, closures anticipated
KYTC says crews will begin installing detour and traffic control signage the week of August 3, with a full road closure expected to begin at the intersection on August 10.
This closure is scheduled to last through the end of October, allowing time for all utilities located in the project area to be relocated. This includes buried water lines located within the project area. Once all utilities are moved out of the way of the project, the roadway is expected to reopen.
The second phase of the project is scheduled to begin in late March, with detour and road closure signage being reinstalled prior to an April 5 closure. KY 107 is expected to remain closed through mid-September 2027 while the new roadway is constructed.
