HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Dozens of protesters from in and around Hopkinsville lined the street on a rainy Saturday by the Christian County Justice Center. This local rally was part of No Kings protests that were planned across the country for June 14. Downtown, the rally peacefully conveyed the message with signs and flags, garnering support and criticism from cars passing by.

“There is a need for organization and movement and speaking out,” said Carrie Nunnally to Christian County Now during the rally. “I don’t feel like we are taking care of each like we should, and our politicians aren’t taking care of us. So, this is us taking care of everyone inclusively, no matter what you believe in, who you love, or the color of your skin.”

The No Kings website says the protests represent a nationwide day of defiance against President Donald Trump, combatting corruption along with recent decisions by the current administration. In Hopkinsville, people from across the region arrived from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Christina Chamberlain from Cadiz said that the funding cuts to federal research is what initially got her fired up for the cause, along with other issues. “The list goes on and on. Trump is absolutely ignoring the Supreme Court, and we can’t have a country if we don’t have a separation of powers,” she said.

Jane Butts was another protester that stood proudly on the side of the road, explaining that she felt passionately about the possible cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and social security. She was thrilled to see such a good turnout of supporters in Hopkinsville. Another protestor, Randall from Hopkinsville emphasized the importance of exercising their right to free speech in a peaceful manner.

Other nearby cities also held rallies on June 14, including Paducah, Bowling Green, and Clarksville, Tennessee.
