OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) –At the Oak Grove City Council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Jackie Oliver proposed establishing the farmers market in Oak Grove as a weekly tradition following its successful trial run.
“The farmers market was a huge success,” Oliver said. “Everyone was pretty satisfied with it,” she told the council.
During the market last weekend, a variety of vendors showcased items such as jewelry, T-shirts, homemade jams, fresh produce, pork rinds, and even a food truck was on site. Initially, Oliver felt uncertain about the turnout and whether they would repeat the event. However, she confirmed with multiple vendors that they would commit to participating again and many were adamant that the market should continue regularly.
“I would not object to having it weekly, but I love farmers markets,” said councilmember Janet Edwards.
During the meeting, members deliberated over who should oversee the market, considering minor parking issues that arose. Mayor Oliver emphasized the need for directing traffic, suggesting partial road closures for safety in the future. Additionally, she noted the significant turnout and announced plans to provide a portable bathroom for attendees’ convenience.
Councilmember Jean Leavell agreed to volunteer this Saturday, in hopes the rain won’t dampen participation. The council intends to address the fine details at a later time.
