PACS resumes transportation operations after snow disruptions, catalytic converter theft

The executive director for Pennyrile Allied Community Services shared how services briefly shifted in response to the winter storm.

HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Pennyrile Allied Community Services (PACS) has resumed regular operations after being stalled for nearly two weeks when the winter storm came through on Jan. 24. Accumulations of snow and ice forced them to halt Hopkinsville Transit, meal delivery services, and in person programs for seniors in Christian County and across the Pennyrile region.

“When the weather conditions are that uncertain, you hesitate to get people out in their vehicles. It would not only be putting our employees potentially at risk, but our passengers as well,” Executive Director Harold Monroe said.

PACS operates public transportation routes throughout Hopkinsville, as well as medical transportation in the region. Slick conditions at bus stops posed an exceptional risk for the aging community and people with disabilities that they serve. Until the ice was cleared, drivers were only able offer select medical rides at the discretion of the drivers.

In addition, PACS vehicles are used to deliver hot meals to seniors, which are prepared each day at the Christian County Senior Center. Non-perishable food items were delivered before the storm to ensure residents who rely on food deliveries were taken care of.

“I will say this about my staff, they are a great bunch of people,” said Monroe. “Even my department heads, all of them are willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty if they need to.”

Among the ice issues, PACS was dealing with an additional setback due to the theft of seven catalytic converters from seven different vehicles. A report from the Hopkinsville Police Department says the theft was reported on Feb. 2 from their South Clay Street parking lot. Monroe added that these were brand new vehicles that are now inoperable, with thousands of dollars in repairs needed. Two of the vehicles impacted were newly acquired Transit busses.

While some residents were concerned about the lapse in public transportation, especially individuals who purchased monthly passes for Hopkinsville Transit, Monroe shared that passes can be brought to the PACS dispatch office, and employees will work to make accommodations.
