HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – As summer heats up, the Pennyrile Area Development District is spearheading a fan collection drive for those lacking air conditioning.

“Many community members do not have access to air conditioning, so we aim to provide support where it’s needed,” said Jill Collins, Director of Pennyrile Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living/ Aging & Disability Resource Centers.

Collins emphasized that the center’s objective is to assist older adults in the community, ensuring they can continue living comfortably in their own homes.

Residents interested in contributing can drop off new fans that are still inside their boxes at the PADD office located at 300 Hammond Drive. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Staying safe during a heat wave

Especially as the heat index begins to rise into triple digits, it’s important for everyone in the community to keep themselves safe and healthy. The National Weather service in Paducah has a few helpful tips.

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning when possible.
  • Remain hydrated by drinking water.
  • Check in on those most vulnerable to heat.
  • If you must go outdoors, go early or late, and dress in light-colored clothing.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every two hours.
  • Take regular breaks in the shade if you must go outside.
