HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The City of Hopkinsville has moved forward with establishing a Downtown Entertainment District that would permit people to walk and drink alcoholic beverages through portions of downtown. Signs have already been erected in the area informing the public about the potential change.
A news release from the city says this initiative is designed to enhance the city’s social atmosphere and improve experiences for events, concerts, and everyday outings. This would create new opportunities for social engagement, tourism, and economic growth for local businesses.
The entertainment district was first presented to Hopkinsville City Council in August 2024. The ordinance councilmembers approved stated that on Saturday’s and Sunday’s between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m., patrons could leave the premises of a participating business with an alcoholic beverage and drink it while walking around downtown. The city will be responsible for providing branded cups along with adequate security to ensure that public streets and pedestrians are kept safe. Patrons will not be permitted to take drinks outside of the boundaries, and drinks from outside the boundary cannot be brought in.

“This is an exciting step forward in making downtown Hopkinsville a more dynamic and inviting destination,” said Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight. “Our goal is to create a welcoming space where people can gather, enjoy live entertainment, and support our local businesses in a fun and responsible way.”
It was initially proposed that the district would cover a large section of downtown, stretching between areas of South Virginia Street and South Main Street. Every eligible business in the boundary will have the opportunity to participate, including the Alhambra Theater, Hopkinsville Bourbon Society, Hopkinsville Brewing Company, and the OddFellows Building. Founders Square is excluded from designated common areas, unless there is a special event occurring.
Pending further state inspection and approval, the Downtown Entertainment District is expected to open this summer. Additional details, including official launch events, will be announced in the coming months by the city.
