HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Fiscal Court has taken the first steps in helping to fund a mountain bike course at the Pennyrile Forest State Park. At the March 26 meeting, the court approved a resolution that allowed Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam to sign the application for the grant funding.

Jessica Kaminski, a Community Development Specialist in Christian County, said the course would provide a training and practice area for bikers who may be new to biking on trails. The course would be on the Christian County side of the park and will be fully accessible while integrating natural materials into the design.

The portion of the park on the Hopkins County side has extensive hiking trails, and this would be the first step of integrating it to the Christian County side.

Grant process

Kaminski said that although the grant process can take almost a year before the funds are seen, she is happy with the progress and thinks it will be great for the community. She estimates it would cost around $146,000, and once construction is able to begin, they could get it built within eight months.

The park attempted to apply for the grant money last year. This time around they are proposing an 80/20 split for funds.  Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam described the park as an underutilized hidden gem in Christian County.
