HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Edgar Cayce, a man who is considered to be one of the most famous psychics in the country, was born and was buried right here in Christian County. Dying in 1945 at the age of 67, his influence in the psychic community continues on in Hopkinsville and beyond.
Cayce was born in a small community called Beverly located in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on March 18, 1877. Growing up, he claims to have developed his clairvoyant talents early in life after being visited by an angel. According to Hopkinsville Tourism, he gave over 14,000 readings in his lifetime. Known as “The Sleeping Prophet”, his work was done while in a self-induced trance. His supposed ability that allowed him to help people improve their physical health during his readings led him to be considered the Father of Holistic Medicine.

Edgar Cayce’s gravesite and museum exhibit in Hopkinsville
“A humble and religious man, he never profited from his predictions,” says a historical marker outside of Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville. “Used his reputed gift of extrasensory perception, including medical diagnosis, to better man’s understanding of God’s purpose for him here on earth.”
Cayce’s gravesite is at Riverside Cemetery, with a very unassuming gravestone despite his level of fame. Currently covered in trinkets and small gifts, the stone is marked by a small sign nearby, with a 55-year-old historical marker installed at the front of the cemetery sharing his story, referring to him as the “Famous Prophet”.

This location is listed on several niche travel websites and Google Maps, being visited by history buffs, spiritual seekers, members of the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment, and local enthusiasts.
Beyond his gravesite, people are able to learn more about the workings and life of Cayce at the Pennyroyal Area Museum in downtown Hopkinsville. An exhibit celebrating this bit of local history is located in a back nook of the museum, with a recreation of his desk and an interactive activity to test the psychic ability of visitors.
For the past couple of years around his birthday, the museum collaborated with the nearby, locally owned business Milkweed Health & Harmony Emporium for an event celebrating his life and work. Over multiple days, they hosted speakers connected to Cayce, along with activities like a chakra workshop, outdoor mural painting, stones and crystal presentation, and more.
Legacy lives on through nonprofit outside of Hopkinsville
His influence continues on beyond Hopkinsville, as the nonprofit he founded over 80 years ago lives on at Virgina Beach, Virginia. Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment was founded by him in 1931 when he was in his 40s, with the purpose of helping people transform their lives.
Members of this association are given access to Cayce’s 14,000 documented readings and supplementary materials. The nonprofit also offers video trainings, lectures, and a Master’s degree program in Transpersonal Psychology through Atlantic University, along with other certifications like regression hypnosis and spiritual mentoring.
