CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Fiscal Court passed the annual tax rates ordinance with a unanimous vote from magistrates. The final vote occurred the morning of Aug 13, with the ordinance allowing a reduction in tax rates and promoting growth for the county.

The ordinance says that the 2024 compensating tax rate for Christian County has been certified at 17.0 cents per $100 valuation of property subject to full county rates. This is a reduction from the previous fiscal year of 18.1 cents per $100. The motor vehicle and watercraft tax rates are set at 11.6 cents.

The tax rates will provide revenue for general purposes along with the maintenance of roads and bridges. Estimated receipts for the county real estate tax is just over $8 million with the new rate. Christian County Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam believes this continued reduction for a third year in a row reflects a pattern of growth for the county.

“Growth is key, so I think we are keeping laser focused on growth and what we are doing to promote small business to promote housing,” Gillam told Christian County Now after the first vote in July.

Gilliam added that people expecting to have their property reassessed will see a reduction in their rate, also clarifying that the tax rate is determined by calculating new growth and previous assessments from the last fiscal year.

“With increased growth comes increases responsibilities. From public safety, to jail, to the Sherriff’s Office, to the animal shelter, to all these other things, and to roads,” said Gilliam. “Thats why our budget committee is really keeping an eye on what we are doing and how we are doing it.”
