HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Hopkinsville- Christian County YMCA revamped and reopened their Teen Center on Aug. 26. They are hoping to provide a dedicated, safe place for teens, allowing them to create community and feel at home.
“At the Teen Center, teens can expect to find a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to create a welcoming and community-focused environment,” said Sheryl Ellis, the president and CEO of Hopkinsville Christian County YMCA. “Our goal is to create a space where teens can have fun, connect with others, and participate in activities that contribute to their personal growth and well-being.”
The newly renovated teen center is open for teens between the ages of 12 and 17. The room has repurposed and new activities for a wide range of interests including a ping pong table, a basketball game, a TV for movies and a TV for video games, a reading nook, board games, and craft table.
“In addition to these activities, the Teen Center is a place for teens to develop their own sense of community through fellowship-focused events,” Ellis told Christian County Now. “As the program grows, we plan to introduce more activities, competitions, and speakers that will help teens grow in overall heath – physically, mentally, and spiritually.”
The space also has a dedicated area for tutoring where the YMCA will provide academic assistance. Outside of the teen center anyone between the ages of 5 and 18, members and non-members can participate in tutoring to ensure all children in the community have access to academic support.
Snacks will be provided for an hour after school daily at 3 p.m., and dinner will be served at the facility between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. According to Ellis, anyone 18 years of age or younger can stop by the YMCA for a meal, regardless of membership status.
Ellis added that teen memberships for the YMCA are relatively inexpensive, and scholarships are available to help with the monthly membership fee to make it more accessible.
