HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The long-anticipated renovation of the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library has been completed and is now open to the public. During construction, all services were consolidated to the first floor, with the second floor previously housing their genealogy, printing services, and non-fiction. The entire floor is now dedicated to children’s and teen programming, with an expansive community room and new offices.

“The renovation focused on three main goals, accessibility, modernization, and creating dedicated spaces for every age group. From children and teens to adults, there is now a space for everyone to learn, grown, and connect,” said HCCPL Director Tiffany Luna, who shared her excitement about unveiling the space with the community. “Your belief and support of the library is what truly makes this building come alive.”

What to expect from the new space, future renovations planned

The grand opening took place the evening of Sept. 25, with community leaders, families, and board members present to be the first to check out changes. The space is open and bright with hundreds of books for youth along with play equipment, a light bright station, and comfortable seating. The Zero Chapter room is dedicated to teenage visitors, which houses study pods, a video game station, and multiple bookcases of reading materials.

An adjustable community room in the back can be open and shut depending on the programming, with its own dedicated bathroom and kitchen. Additional offices for the Literacy Council and Imagination Library are also tucked away upstairs, along with new storage options.

This renovation marks the completion of multiple phases of changes, starting with upgrading the downstairs bathrooms to be ADA compliant, extending to the installment of a larger capacity elevator, and new bathrooms upstairs. It was originally estimated to be completed in the spring of 2025, with the entire project ultimately taking a year. Grant funding for this project totaled $480,000 and was put in motion by the Christian County Fiscal Court in February of 2024 after two years of delays.

“While today we celebrate all that we have accomplished, we are also looking ahead. Plans for the downstairs include a maker space, quiet study rooms, and a dedicated passport area. These are all ways we can continue expanding services to meet the needs of our community,” said Luna.
