HOPKINSVILLE, KY – In response to the ongoing heat advisories and extreme temperatures across the area, The Salvation Army of Hopkinsville will begin operating its residential shelter 24 hours a day starting Thursday afternoon, July 24, 2025. The shelter will remain open around the clock for the next two weeks, in alignment with the current extended forecast.
“We know the rising heat is a serious threat to our most vulnerable neighbors, especially families with children, seniors, and those without consistent housing,” said Lieutenant David Donegan, Corps Officer. “While the cost of operating the shelter 24/7 is not currently accounted for in our budget, we know without a doubt that God will make a way. The needs of our community come first.”
The 24-hour shelter service is aimed at ensuring no one is left exposed during the hottest parts of the day. Residents will be able to stay safely inside, receive water, food, and support services, and find relief from the extreme temperatures.
“Matthew 25:35 reminds us, ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,’” said Lieutenant Brittney Donegan. “Our mission is to be the hands and feet of Christ, and during this heat wave, that means opening our doors and hearts wider than ever.”
In addition to expanded shelter operations, the Hopkinsville LifNAV Center (310 East Seventh Street) will extend its weekday hours and remain open until 6:00 PM for the next two weeks. Anyone in need of water, cooling, or brief refuge is welcome to stop by—even if they are not staying in the shelter.
“This is about dignity and compassion,” Lt. David continued. “We’re seeing families with children trying to spend the day in their cars or public parks because they have nowhere else to go. That’s not acceptable—not on our watch, not in our city.”
Lt. Brittney added, “We believe in showing people the love of Christ not just in words but in actions. Proverbs 3:27 tells us, ‘Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.’ We have the power, and we must act.”
The Salvation Army of Hopkinsville invites community partners and individuals who would like to support this effort—whether through donations, supplies, or volunteer time—to reach out.
