HOPKINSVILLE, KY – Christian County Public Schools was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) for South Christian Elementary. The grant money will be allocated over the next five years and will be used to purchase Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) resources, equipment, and supplies.
The goal is to authentically engage students in these concepts, provide vibrant learning experiences and help them further discover the world around them while increasing student capacity in Math and Science.
“We are pleased to receive the DoDEA grant for South Christian Elementary” said CCPS Director of Grants and Federal Programs Dr. Tracey Leath. “We know that military-connected students often face challenges that are unique to them. Securing this grant will provide invaluable resources that empower all our students and allow us to better serve them and their families.”
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a field activity of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. DoDEA’s mission is to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage the education programs for eligible dependents of U.S. military personnel and civilian personnel of the Department of Defense.
DoDEA has congressional authority to provide resources to public schools to support the continuity of education for military-connected students through a competitive grant program. DoDEA’s vision of “Excellence in education for every student, every day, everywhere” is realized through this partnership with public school districts.
South Christian Elementary, located in Herndon, KY near Fort Campbell, has one of the highest populations of military-connected students in the district. Tiffany Gray, principal at South Christian Elementary explained that some of the equipment the school would look at purchasing could include drones, robotics materials, 3D printing materials, and coding programs.
