HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – During the August meeting of the Hopkinsville Commitee of the Whole, Police Chief Jason Newby shared that Animal Control has received a higher-than-average number of complaints recently about of skunks in residential neighborhoods.
“If it was one or two houses that is something that our animal control could take care of,” said Newby during the meeting. “But, with the amount of complaints and concerns that we have in that area, that’s just beyond our means for Animal Control.”
He said this has been an issue specifically in the Ward 7 area. This section of south Hopkinsville spans between the area of Cardinal Drive, extending further south just across the Eagle Way Bypass. According to Amanda Brunt with the City of Hopkinsville, there were around a dozen direct complaints to animal control about skunk sightings, in addition to even more calls, social media posts, and other reports.
Newby shared that he is meeting with two companies within the week to get an estimate of cost for skunk removal. These services will catch and release the skunks outside of the city, with the goal of eliminating them from the area as humanely as possible.
Next, estimates will be presented to the mayor and city council for approval and next steps. Anyone who encounters skunks in and out of Ward 7 can file a complaint on the City of Hopkinsville website.
