HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Southwestern Kentucky Economic Development Council discussed recent growth in Christian County and how Buc-ee’s plays a role in it all during their monthly meeting on Sept. 30.

“You’re looking at in essence a lot of economic activity that has been fueling the local marketplace. I think we can all just look around and see evidence of that.” said Carter Hendricks, the executive director of SWK Economic Development Council.

During his presentation to the board about economic growth, he said there has been over $2 billion in announced projects in Christian County since 2020. Over 2,000 new jobs have been associated with those announced projects with $500 million invested in infrastructure since 2020.

As more industry comes to the area, annual tourism spending has also continued to increase in Christian County. The hotel industry alone has benefited as large construction projects provide long term hotel stays for contracts and sub-contractors.

“That tells a really powerful story,” said Hendricks. “That growth is helping drive down property tax rates, which I think we all celebrate when we are trying to be competitive as long as we keep maintaining our ability to deliver services.”

The topic of growth can no longer be discussed without bringing up the recently announced Buc-ee’s development set to break ground in Oak Grove, Kentucky in 2025. Hendricks said they have received a lot of positive feedback since the announcement at the Oak Grove City Council meeting on Sept. 17.

“I think it’s safe to say the crowd has gone wild for this announcement,” Hedricks told the board. He added that the $70 million facility will be 74,000 square feet and employ over 200 full time employees. It is expected to provide a significant amount of increased tax revenue for local tourism and contribute to growing the area around Exit 89 off of Interstate- 24.

Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver was present at the meeting and was gifted a Buc-ee’s hat by the board. Hendricks commended her and credited the good leadership that was in place to make this happen.
