HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Hopkinsville City Council will hold their second and final vote to establish this fiscal year’s property tax rate during a special called meeting on Sept. 18.
The tax rate ordinance passed the first vote two days prior with no discussion among the council. A public hearing was held at 10 a.m. the day of the first vote, with no public comments. There was one vote against the ordinance cast by Councilmember Brittanie Bogard. For this fiscal year, the council has proposed the following tax levy and property tax rates.
- Tax levy of 20.2 cents on each $100 of taxable real property
- 23.9 cents on each $100 of taxable personal property
- 25.1 cents on each $100 of taxable motor vehicle and watercraft property.
Last fiscal year, the council voted to approve a compensating tax rate of 20.9 cents. The personal property and motor vehicle rates have not changed. All levies that are established the ordinance will be deposited into the city’s General Fund. In this year’s proposed budget, it was anticipated that the city would see approximately $5.8 million in property tax revenue.
The ordinance also specifies tax levies on unmanufactured goods handled within city limits. This includes a 1.5-cent ad valorem tax on every $100 of the fair cash value of unmanufactured tobacco, and a 4.5-cent tax on every $100 of unmanufactured agricultural products. The levy applies to establishments, firms, companies and corporations that process the products, unless otherwise exempt.
If the council passes the second vote on Sept. 18, the property tax rate for the city will be set.
