HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – While outside still looks like a winter wonderland, today is not the day for fun in the snow due to a Cold Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service through 10 a.m. The wind chill will bring in extreme cold throughout Christian County on Thursday.
Gusts up to 20 mph are expected to blow through, with Thursday morning starting off at -4 degrees around 7 a.m. As the sun tries to break through, the warmest it will be is 20 degrees. The wind will settle down by the time sun sets, with the low dropping to two degrees overnight.
“While the coldest wind chill values occur today, bitterly cold air will remain in place through Friday,” said NWS in Paducah. They are also encouraging people to limit their outdoor exposure today due to the risk of hypothermia.
Road conditions
Although extensive plowing was done on Feb. 19 for city and state roads, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet had anticipated roads to refreeze and become hazardous overnight. In a news release, they supplied the following tips for driving on icy roads in Christian County.
- Slow down: Reduce your speed and leave extra space between you and other cars.
- Avoid cruise control: Don’t rely on cruise control when roads are icy.
- Look for shiny patches: Black ice can appear as a glossy, shiny surface.
- Use headlights: Low-beam headlights can help you see icy pavement.
- Steer into skids: If you skid, ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want to go.
- Use a higher gear: A higher gear can help with traction.
