HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The newest addition to the Hopkinsville Fire Department breaks the typical dalmatian stereotypes of fire stations. HFD says their new labrador therapy dog named Bear will be working alongside Department Chaplain Nathan Miller to comfort, support and a provide a calming presence to community members who are in crisis.

“Whether assisting first responders during debriefings and after-action reviews or offering reassurance to individuals following traumatic events, Bear is here to help carry the emotional weight that often comes with the job,” said a statement from HFD introducing Bear.

Bear was donated to the department by Freedom Service Dogs in Denver, Colorado. Right now, he is one of Kentucky’s only fire-based service dogs focused exclusively on emotional support, according to HFD.

“Just like his namesake, Bear stands as a symbol of strength, care, and protection, but with a softer side that reminds us none of us have to face difficult moments alone,” continued the statement.

HFD spokesperson Payton Rogers told Christian County Now that Bear was trained specifically to assist people in crisis. With the support of Chief Futrell, the process of getting him started almost two years ago. He said Bear will be utilized across all public safety agencies in Christian County via the extensive peer support program.
