HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Hopkinsville Fire Department gave their quarterly report at the Committee of the Whole meeting on June 13, revealing their success with eliminating unsafe structures within the city.
Since code enforcement now goes through HFD, Fire Chief Steve Futrell reported to the committee that in the last three months, 15 structures have been demolished in Hopkinsville with seven others set to come down within the next six weeks.
“We are going through these neighborhoods daily and getting input,” Futrell told the committee. “Some of these have been sitting for years and they are safety hazards. We get complaints a lot that their kids are going in them, and their neighbors are concerned.”
Of the 15 demolitions, four of the structures were uninhabitable due to fires. In addition to these, eight structures had the demolition handled by property owners.
Futrell told the council that it is not an easy process, but they are committed to keeping up with the forever changing number of properties coming through. He went on to tell the committee that they have received nothing but positive feedback about these structures coming down.
