HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A Wind Advisory has been issued for Christian County by the National Weather Service between Friday at 1 p.m. through 4 a.m. Saturday. Widespread thunderstorms are expected this evening into tonight with the potential for significant severe weather and damaging winds in excess of 70 mph along with tornadoes, and large hail.
According to NWS, additional thunderstorms are possible on Saturday, some of which may be severe with damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes. This threat is primarily across west Kentucky and southwest Indiana.
Storm shelter in Crofton
The tornado shelter located in north Christian County will be opening ahead of the storms. Located at 13511 North Madisonville Road in Crofton, it is able to withstand a direct hit from an E-5 tornado, as previously stated by Christian County Emergency Management.
According to the Crofton Severe Weather Safe Room Facebook page, they will open the doors Friday afternoon according to Crofton Mayor Danny Lacy. City officials confirmed that the shelter is open to anyone within safe driving distance, with the capacity to fit a few hundred people.
Mayor Lacy shared that in the event of extreme weather, around 200 people will arrive at the shelter. Basic essentials like water may be provided, but people are encouraged to bring comfort items, snacks, and ways to entertain themselves during the storm. Pets inside a carrier are welcome as well.
