HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – As a wintry storm mix moves in, Christian County is expected to see light ice accumulation Sunday morning as highs drop below freezing. A winter storm watch has been issued from late Saturday night to late Sunday night for the area.

The lows will be in the teens to 20s Sunday through Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Total snow and sleet accumulations of four inches or more are possible. Rachel Trevino, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, says some ice accumulation is likely but not a significant amount.

“We are not expecting the ice storm of 2009,” said Trevino. “This system will have a lot more wind making ice harder to collect on powerlines and trees.” Wind speeds are predicted around 10-25 mph.

After the freezing rain and showers move out Sunday night, a chance of snow dusting is possible Monday. “Things are still very much up in the air, but we do know incredibly cold temperatures are moving behind the system,” said Trevino. She adds that power outages are possible, and preparation is key if residents lose power during freezing temperatures.

Hopkinsville could see a temperature as low as 8 degrees by late next week. Overall, it will be mostly dry but very cold each day with highs only near freezing.
