HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Nearly a year after construction first began at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library, the renovation of the second floor is wrapping up with an opening date set to reveal the changes.

At the Aug. 26 Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, Magistrate J.E. Pryor said the library board confirmed they will debut the renovations on Sept. 25. The second floor of the library has been completely shut down since construction began, with all resources consolidated to the first floor for the past year.

“In the next few weeks, our team will be focused on putting the finishing touches in place, everything from furniture and technology setup to shelving books and preparing new spaces for programs,” HCCPL Director Tiffany Luna told Christian County Now. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see this project come together, and we can’t wait to welcome the community back into a space that’s more modern and accessible.”

The library will be closed from Aug. 28 through Sept. 6 so staff can pull out materials from storage and get them in place on the second floor. This massive project was initially estimated to be completed this past spring, and was then pushed to July, but was later extended through the end of the summer.

What to expect from library renovation

In September of 2024, the renovations kicked off as library staff worked to remove all materials from the second floor of the building. A full demolition of the space allowed them to open up the walls and restructure the square footage completely.

During a tour of the renovations in progress back in May, Executive Director Tiffany Luna walked Christian County Now through the layout, which will soon house the children’s section, a new teen room, and a large community room that can fit over 100 people while creating a lot of additional storage and office spaces.

Additional phases of the renovation included installing a brand-new ADA accessible elevator and upgrading the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms.
