HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Literacy Council is bringing back their Real Men Read program this school year, where male community volunteers have the opportunity to read to first and second grade classrooms in the public school system.
“Our mission is simple: to inspire a love of literacy in our community, starting with our youngest scholars,” said a statement from the literacy council. “By having men step into classrooms and share the joy of reading, we’re showing students that reading is for everyone.”
After signing up, volunteers will visit a classroom four times during the school year to read school board approved books to students. According to the literacy council, each volunteer is paired with the same classroom for every visit, allowing them to build meaningful connections while encouraging a lifelong love of reading. At the end of each visit, the book is donated to the classroom library so students can continue to enjoy it.
Here are the reading dates for volunteers during the school year.
- Sept. 11
- Oct. 16
- Jan. 8
- March 12
When registering, volunteers have the option to commit to all four dates, just choose a few, or become a backup reader. They are also able to select a preferred elementary school to be assigned to and could request to be placed in a classroom of family member.
Register for Real Men Read on the form from the Christian County Literacy Council.
