OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A recent encounter with a local veteran in crisis has led to the Oak Grove Police Department sharing important information for residents about suicide prevention and mental health resources.

Officers were dispatched to a home on Cheshire Way for a welfare check on Sept. 29 where they found a military veteran who was threatening to harm himself, according to a news release from Oak Grove PD. Communiation was established with the man, and officers were able to utilize de-escalation techniques until he surrendered to the police. He was then taken into custody and transported to a mental health facility to receive treatment.

“We commend the compassion and patience our officers displayed during this tense situation,” said the news release. “Their quick actions and professionalism embody the core values of our agency. If you or someone you know is struggling, please do not hesitate to seek help. Numerous resources within our county offer support without judgment, providing the care and compassion we all deserve.”

Oak Grove PD shared the following services that residents can utilize if they or someone they know is experiencing suicidal thoughts or mental health crisis.

  • Dial 988: This is a free service that allows individuals in crisis to text or call and speak with someone. Conversations are confidential.
  • Pennyroyal Center: Call 1-877-473-7766 for mental health services available in-person or via telehealth. They can be contacted anytime, day or night, to speak with a mental health professional.
  • Cumberland Hall Hospital: Reach out at 270-886-5163. This mental health facility provides care for children and adults facing emotional disorders, psychiatric conditions, and addiction. They offer programs specifically tailored to meet the needs of active military personnel and veterans.
