FORT CAMPBELL, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Tennessee Wings of Liberty Museum is expected to open on March 29, and will be the second-largest Army museum in the country.

Located at the intersection of Fort Campbell Boulevard and Tiny Town Road, the museum is located just outside the Fort Campbell military installation, so entry onto post is not needed. Admission is free to the public.

The 50,000-square-foot museum, situated on a 33-acre campus, showcases the legacy of Fort Campbell’s most storied units in military history, including the 101st Airborne Division, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the 5th Group Special Forces Group, and other tenant divisions, according to a news release from Visit Clarksville. Exhibits highlight campaigns including World War II, Vietnam, Desert Storm, the Global War on Terrorism and current ongoing operations.

The museum will include interactive exhibits inside, as well as aircraft and a memorial courtyard outside.

“From the transformative moment when it opens to the public, our Tennessee Wings of Liberty Museum is going to become a major symbol of military and community pride, as well as a major and leading tourism engine for Clarksville and the entire Southeast region of the United States,” said Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts in the release. “What is to be housed within the Wings of Liberty Museum is the compelling story of one of our country’s most time-honored, consistently vital and relevant, and treasured military installations.”

Public-private funding, with big help from state

Efforts to create the museum have been ongoing for decades, with fundraising taking the bulk of that time. The museum is a public-private partnership made possible by $20 million in funding from the State of Tennessee, along with funding from Montgomery County, the City of Clarksville, and private donors.

“The new Wings of Liberty Museum is a long-awaited milestone for our community, serving as a place of pride and reflection for residents and a meaningful destination for visitors, highlighting Montgomery County’s deep military connection and honoring the sacrifices made in defense of our freedoms,” said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden in the release. “The museum is expected to attract crowds of visitors each year, strengthening local tourism and generating an estimated $17 million to $20 million in regional economic impact with engaging exhibits that tell the story of Fort Campbell’s history for all ages.”
