OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Volunteers with the newly rebranded Southwestern Kentucky Military Affairs Committee came together in support of the local military during this year’s Hams for Heroes event. Cars with active-duty military members and first responders lined up at Oak Grove Gaming, Racing & Hotel to receive a free Easter ham and a bag with a few dinner essentials on April 2 starting at 11 a.m.

“Everyone is here because they love to serve this community,” MAC Director Shannon Lane told Christian County Now. Unloading and distributing the food were volunteers from around the county including Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver and councilmembers along with Christian County magistrates, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R Knight, police, Hopkinsville Fire Department and others.

The MAC was able to provide 630 hams and around 40 volunteers contributed to the event. After the window closed for the event, veterans were able to come through receive a ham until supplies were gone. Funding to purchase the hams were given by Oak Grove Gaming, who have also continued to host this event along with the MAC’s turkey distribution during Thanksgiving.

“We are very grateful for all off the committee,” said Lane “Their continued trust and into the military affairs allows us to continue doing things like this.”
