HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Early Thursday afternoon, Hopkinsville firefighters successfully extinguished a brush fire that burned around 2,000 square feet in a short amount of time.
The fire occurred near the intersection of Lovers Lane and I-169 (Pennyrile Parkway) in Hopkinsville. A statement from HFD says the fire was likely caused by a discarded cigarette, which ignited right off the shoulder of the roadway.
“With today’s wind, it could’ve been much worse,” said HFD. “Be smart. Don’t discard cigarettes out of the window.” The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for Christian County through sunset on April 2. Gusts from south winds may reach upward of 40 mph.
According to the Division of Forestry for Kentucky, spring forest fire season extends from Feb. 15 through April 30 due to dry conditions and excess wind.
