HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Christian County Public Schools has completed a track resurfacing project, to revive the deteriorating old track located on Elm Street behind the current Gateway Academy. It is now open for public use.
“This project reflects CCPS’ ongoing commitment to supporting student success while strengthening connections with the community,” said a news release from the school system.
This $220,000 investment was made to provide their student-athletes with a safe, high-quality practice facility while also offering the community a designated space for walking and physical activity, according to CCPS. Money for the project was taken from the Christian County Board of Education’s general fund.
The track was initially slated to receive maintenance back in 2016, but it was ultimately put on the back burner. The school board previously discussed the condition of the track, saying that it was rapidly deteriorating due to daily use. At the time, board members were on the fence about investing in resurfacing, with Superintendent Chris Bentzel emphasizing that it would eventually become a safety hazard.
Video surveillance, hours of public use
“We are incredibly proud of this project and the investment made to support both our students and community,” said Jason Wilson, Assistant Superintendent of Operations. “This upgraded track enhances our facilities for student use while also creating a safe and accessible space for our community to stay active.”
The facility will now be monitored by video surveillance, and CCPS is asking visitors to be respectful and help keep the area clean. While the track is open during designated hours, school-related activities and events will take precedence and may impact availability. The community is able to have general access Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Anyone who has questions or concerns about the facility should contact Trey Wheeler, Assistant Principal at Christian County Middle School.
