HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – “The roots of this community run deep,” said Christian County Chamber President Taylor Hayes, welcoming a group of hundreds of community members during the 137th Annual Christian County Chamber of Commerce Dinner. The “Rooted in the Community,” theme was a consistent thread throughout the evening as business owners and Chamber members were celebrated.
Instead of a traditional keynote speaker, local representatives instead engaged the crowd in a theatrical retelling of Christian County history. Hayes said, “Tonight is also about a story. A story that began 225 plus years ago when this community was only a glimmer. A story of people willing to take risk.”

Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County Director Alissa Keller and local historian William Turner sat down to share an in depth history of Christian County, dating back to early life. They discussed the importance of crops, the establishment of the railroad, along with key farming families that have remained influential.
Turner is a retired local teacher who started his education career in Christian County in the 60s and taught over 14,000 students during that time. During the dinner, alongside Keller, he recounted dozens of local facts from the rise and fall of the Latham Hotel to the history of the competing movie theaters downtown.
Various storytellers representing different roles in the county were posted around the room speaking about the rise of prominent industries, the importance of small businesses in Christian County, the expansion of the school system, arts and culture and the area’s overall global reach.

After the presentation, the Chamber donated $500 to the museum in honor of their upcoming 50th anniversary, and several awards were distributed.
