CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Christian County has a higher-than-average unemployment rate as compared to nearby counties and the state. During their most recent board meeting, the Southwestern Kentucky Economic Development Council discussed what these number means for the region.
Once a month, SWK EDC Executive Director Carter Hendricks shares updated unemployment rates for the counties in the area, with Christian County consistently ranking the highest as reflected in May’s report. Below is the data that was presented to the board during the June meeting.
| County | Unemployment rate for May 2026 |
|---|---|
| Christian County | 5.1% |
| Todd County | 3.3% |
| Trigg County | 4.4% |
| Montgomery County (Tennessee) | 3.5% |
| Regional average | 4.7% |
| Kentucky average | 4.5% |
| United States average | 4.6% |
“We kind of like where we are,” said Hendricks. He iterated that these numbers have not changed much month to month, with Todd County generally being the lowest in the region for the past couple of years.
Although Christian County has the highest rate, he stated that having a low unemployment rate is not necessarily a good thing, saying that overemployment is a challenge for some employers in these areas.
As an example, he said some Tennessee counties with a lower rate may face work force challenges. There may be 100 jobs available for only 83 people who are looking for work. However, in many Kentucky counties, there may be 103 people available for those 100 jobs due to a higher unemployment rate.
Christian County residents are able to file for unemployment on the Kentucky Career Center website. Individuals must be able to provide identifying information along with employer information for the past 18 months.
