HOPKINSVILLE, KY – Sanctuary, Inc. is proud to announce the public phase of its Capital Campaign after successfully raising more than 70% of its $2 million fundraising goal, marking a significant milestone toward the construction of a new facility designed to better serve survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout the Pennyrile region.

The new facility plans to finance the project through a USDA Community Facilities Loan, while campaign contributions, grant funding, and unrestricted funding sources will be used to reduce and repay the loan over an extended 40-year period.

“This project is much more than a building,” said Heather Lancaster, Executive Director of Sanctuary, Inc. “It is about creating a space that reflects the dignity, safety, and hope every survivor deserves while ensuring our organization can continue serving our community for years to come.”

Features and need for new facility

The decision to build a new facility comes after years of evaluating the limitations of Sanctuary’s current building. While it has faithfully served the organization, the agency and Board of Directors are proposing solutions to the inefficient use of space and location, along with enhancing safety features.

Unlike the current facility, the new building will be fully ADA-compliant, energy-efficient, and intentionally designed to provide a welcoming and trauma-informed environment. Working alongside local architects and industry professionals, Sanctuary has determined that thoughtful design will allow the organization to operate more efficiently in approximately half the square footage of its existing building while significantly improving functionality with the installment of enhanced safety applications.

The new facility has been carefully planned to support both emergency shelter services and the wide range of community-based programs Sanctuary provides.

Features will include:

  • Secure and private parking and entrances for clients and staff.
  • Emergency shelter rooms and apartment-style accommodations designed to comfortably serve larger families, to include service animals.
  • Dedicated residential and non-residential service wings to improve privacy, confidentiality, and program delivery.
  • Meeting spaces for support groups, individual counseling, legal advocacy, and medical advocacy and SAFE exams.
  • A children’s playroom that will also function as a reinforced storm shelter.
  • A shared kitchen and flexible gathering spaces that foster healing and community.
  • Green space to offer more recreational and therapeutic options for adults, children and pet reunification.

More about Sanctuary Inc., how to donate

While Sanctuary is widely recognized for its emergency shelter, more than 80 percent of those served each year are non-residential clients. These individuals access critical services including legal advocacy, medical advocacy, safety planning, counseling, support groups, and other resources that help survivors rebuild their lives while remaining in their own homes or arranging for relocation due to safety concerns.

The new facility has been designed with these realities in mind, creating dedicated spaces that improve access to services while preserving the privacy and safety of every client.

Having secured over 70% of the campaign goal through generous leadership gifts, grants, and private contributions, Sanctuary is now inviting the broader community to help bring the project across the finish line.

“This campaign represents an investment in the future of our entire community,” says Marsha Garnett, Capital Campaign Chair. “Every dollar invested helps ensure that survivors have access to safe shelter, compassionate services, and the support they need to move forward with confidence.”

Community members, businesses, civic organizations, and philanthropic partners are encouraged to join the public phase of the campaign and help make this transformational project a reality.
