HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Jeffers Bend Environmental Center is planning to host their fourth annual Hummingbird Festival on Aug. 22 in Hopkinsville, where families have a chance to directly engage with bird banding and learn more about these buzzing little creatures.

During this free summer event from 9 a.m. to noon, members of the Christian County Master Gardeners who are well-versed in hummingbirds will catch and release these delicate birds throughout the morning. Bands will be placed on them in order to track their migration patterns. During last year’s event around 250 people came by, a few of which were chosen to release the birds directly from their hands.

According to a news release from Jeffers Bend, efforts will be made over the next few weeks to attract hummingbirds to the environmental center, which will culminate in the festival.

Families will also have a chance to hear Native American folklore about hummingbirds and learn more about their physiology and migration patterns. There will be a poster contest as well for kids, and various presentations on pollinators, how to make bird feeders, insects and more. Visitors can also expect refreshments and prize drawings along with a donation auction for a hummingbird cake.
