HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A food truck festival is coming to downtown Hopkinsville as Taste of the Town returns for their sixth annual event in August. Hosted each year by the owners of the local food truck Vansauwa’s Tacos & Vegan Eats, the event aims to highlight black owned businesses and vendors.
Last year’s event brought live entertainment, food and drinks to Founders Square for a weekend of dancing and community. This year people can expect even more fun with around a dozen food trucks and vendors expected to come from around Tennessee and Kentucky alongside a community 8K/5K run down the Hopkinsville Greenway.
“We’re going to have DJs, music, bounce houses, things for the whole community to enjoy,” said owner Desaepa Vansauwa about the event at a recent Hopkinsville City Council meeting. He encouraged people to come hungry to enjoy everything the festival has to offer.
Taste of the Town will coincide with the Eighth of August holiday weekend, starting Friday, Aug. 7 from 5-9 p.m. and again on Saturday, Aug. 8 with the run at 8 a.m. and the event from 12-9 p.m. Food trucks and music will be set up at Founders Square in downtown Hopkinsville.
Otherwise known as Emancipation Day, the Eighth of August is a day to commemorate the liberation of enslaved people in the Western Kentucky and Tennessee region. On Aug. 8, 1863, Tennessee military governor and future president Andrew Johnson announced the freedom of enslaved people on his land, triggering emancipation across the region and in the Union.
