HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – With an injury involving an electric bike occurring Tuesday night just days after another similar crash, emergency medical services in Hopkinsville is reminding bike riders and motorists to abide by traffic laws and use caution.
“We’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that roadway safety is a shared responsibility,” said a statement from Hopkinsville EMS. “Riders of electric bicycles should follow the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles, including obeying traffic signals and stop signs, using hand signals when turning, and remaining visible to motorists.”
At 6 p.m. on July 21, emergency crews responded to an accident involving an electric bike and a vehicle at the intersection of Fort Campbell Boulevard and Country Club Lane. The person riding the bike was ejected upon impact and sustained serious injuries. They were transported to Vanderbilt Clarksville for treatment.
A few days prior on July 18, a 13-year-old on an electric bike collided head on with a vehicle, also in the area of Country Club Lane. The bike was traveling around 20 mph when the accident occurred.
EMS added that drivers also need to remain vigilant around bikes to avoid accidents, “Likewise, drivers should stay alert, slow down when approaching cyclists, and provide a safe amount of space when passing. A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of consequences. Help us make our roads safer for everyone.”
