HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A second public hearing will be held at Hopkinsville Community College to allow Hopkinsville residents to be involved in discussion about data centers. It was announced in August by Hopkinsville Electric System that a crypto mining facility in Hopkinsville is looking to expand into a 50-megawatt data center in the city.
On Monday, Sept. 28, Community and Development Services will hold this second hearing regarding a proposed amendment to the Hopkinsville Zoning Ordinance. This amendment will preemptively establish regulations for potential data center developments within city limits.
Discussion about establishing regulations around potential data center developments was initiated in June, prior to the announcement by HES, which led to the first hearing.
Implementing these changes to the zoning ordinance will allow the City of Hopkinsville to define what a “data center” means and will establish standards for their siting, construction, installation and operation. They also aim to identify the zoning districts where different types of data centers may be permitted to be, according to a statement from the city.
After the hearing, CDS will draft an ordinance amendment, and it will be presented to the Hopkinsville City Council for approval at a later date.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the Hopkinsville Community College Auditorium lecture hall. Residents in attendance will be able to ask questions, provide feedback, and hear what information is being proposed during the meeting.
