HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – In order to increase safety for students and control traffic around the new Christian County High School, the city is taking the first steps to establish a new crosswalk and change the speed limit on a nearby road.

A memo from the Hopkinsville Public Works Department to Mayor James R. Knight recommended establishing a 25-mph school zone on Lovers Lane, beginning approximately 200 feet from Fort Campbell Boulevard and extending to approximately 500 feet west of Conference Center Drive.

“The state has already put in school zones on Fort Campbell Boulevard, so we really need to put one on Lovers Lane and slow traffic down for the safety of the students there and pedestrians,” said Hopkinsville Public Works Director Mike Perry during the Oct. 27 Hopkinsville Committee of the Whole meeting.

Public works also requested that the city designates a pedestrian crosswalk at the entrance of the Hopkinsville Town Center across the street from the school. Perry said this additional crosswalk will allow students to have a designated area to cross if they are heading toward or coming from the shopping center.

Councilmembers unanimously approved the speed limit change and the crosswalk, and it will now move to a Hopkinsville City Council meeting for final approval.
