HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – “It’s always been home,” said Christian County Sheriff Tyler DeArmond. “People here have always been pretty much the same. There are always welcoming people our community, there’s a small-town kind of atmosphere here.”

DeArmond’s family made the move to Christian County in 1996 when he was in middle school. After calling this place home for so long and graduating from college, he said he never had a good reason to leave. He praises Hopkinsville as a unique location in Kentucky with Land Between the Lakes and big cities close by. Although businesses and people have come and gone, the heart of the city has always remained.

“We’re convenient to Clarksville, we’re convenient to Nashville and Fort Campbell,” said DeArmond. “We’ve got a lot of soldiers and soldiers’ families that live here and bring different views and ideas … big cities are right next to you, but you still have a rural country life.”

When he isn’t behind a desk or out in the community, DeArmond makes sure to leave a lot of time for nature and family. He is a proud dad of two kids and values every second he has with them as they continue to grow up.

“I’m an outdoorsman, so we enjoy riding horses and hunting; we have a small family farm,” said DeArmond. “I’ve got a 19- and 14-year-old, and spending time with my family is where I like to be at.”

History in law enforcement

“I don’t really like talking about myself much, I like being behind the scenes,” said DeArmond when asked to open up about his role in the CCSO.

DeArmond was elected Christian County sheriff in 2018 and took office in 2019. Prior to that, he spent years at the Hopkinsville Police Department in multiple fields. He began at HPD in 2004, where he was a K-9 handler for six years and spent some time in the gang and narcotics units. Also, he worked with SRO officers, and was investigation supervisor. All of this sums up to 14 years of hard work at Hopkinsville Police Department. It was this time when he realized he needed to do something more.

“I enjoyed what I was doing on the level I was doing it, but I wanted to make changes in the department and the community,” DeArmond said. “I wanted to have a voice as well.”

DeArmond is serving his 19th year in law enforcement and credits the team at CCSO for working as hard as they can for Christian County. Since being elected, he has continually prioritized public safety and community involvement. He wants to ensure that the community has a positive relationship with deputies.

The Sherrif’s Office has recently done several public forums, they have the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy, and have been part of community events like the Community Readers Day and a huge adoption event they hosted with multiple local shelters.

DeArmond said being sheriff was only a recent dream of his, and he said his younger self would be proud and shocked at where he is now.
