HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The search for the country’s best spellers begins this month at The Alhambra Theater in Hopkinsville. Students from across the state will compete on Feb. 24 for a chance to represent Kentucky in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

While dozens of students are set to attend from across the state, 12 students will be from right here in Christian County. The three champions from the event will move on to the national stage at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland this May.

“It has been an amazing honor and opportunity for Hopkinsville to host this,” said Visit Hopkinsville Manager Amy Rogers.

Visit Hopkinsville began their partnership with Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2023, giving students the opportunity to participate in America’s longest running educational competition.

Judges are also Christian County residents and include Ryan Clark with Visit Hopkinsville, Alissa Keller from the museum, and Beth Brockman from the Literacy Council.  President of Hopkinsville Community College, Dr. Alissa Young, will host the event.

“It’s so inspiring to see those young people up there under all that pressure and be able to spell those words,” Young said. “I am extremely excited.”

The bee will begin at 2 p.m. at the Alhambra. Admission is free and open to the public.
