HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Yard of the Month is a contest that recognizes the efforts of Hopkinsville residents who take pride in their home and landscape, inspiring others to do the same. The contest returns for 2024, and residents can nominate a house by March 27 to Hopkinsville Beautification.
The program began in 2008 when the Hopkinsville Beautification Commission was started. In 2015, the commission disbanded the project due to lack of involvement. Then in 2020, the commission was dissolved as beautification was taken over by Hopkinsville Public Works. After being put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic, the contest was back for the first time last year.
Currently, the 2024 program will award three houses in March, May, July, and September. Winners can win once per calendar year and will be awarded a certificate along with recognition on the City of Hopkinsville website.
Judges will use several pieces of criteria when choosing a yard of the month:
- Yard is well groomed.
- Yard is pleasing to the eye.
- Buildings, fences, porches, and patios on the property are in good repair.
- Yard is free of litter and junk.
- House numbers are displayed attractively.
- Does a passerby sense that the homeowner has pride in their landscape and property.
