HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County High School Agriculture Department was awarded $5,000 to support the purchase of a starter flock of Dorper sheep to enhance their animal science education. The grant is a part of the 2025 Agriculture Achiever Grant program with the Kentucky FFA Association, which allowed the department to purchase a total of seven animals.
Mr. Jacob Jaworski, an agriculture teacher at CCHS, explained that students in the program are already deeply involved in hands-on tasks and are responsible for the day-to-day care of animals along with tackling hurdles that may arise. Three of the new animals purchased through the grant were bred registered Dorper ewes, each of with gave birth shortly after settling into the barn, where students proved to be integral.
“Recently, we had several lambs born, and students played a crucial role from start to finish,” said Jaworski. “They helped plan the layout of the barn, determine the placement of lambing jugs, and assisted with the delivery of the lambs. Additionally, students were involved in ear tagging, tail docking, and ensuring proper care for the newborns.”
With the help of the grant, the agriculture department currently houses 21 sheep, one pig, three chickens, and five rabbits, all of which play an integral role in the Animal Science Pathway. Being one of only a few schools in the entire state that were chosen to receive grant money, Jaworski confirmed that their program is truly unique that few Kentucky schools can match. Their growing program allows students with and without agriculture backgrounds to learn and expand their knowledge in a hands-on environment.
“By enhancing this pathway, we offer students the unique opportunity to elevate their education by blending classroom learning with hands-on, real-world experience,” Jaworski said. “Students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain practical skills through direct interaction with animals and industry practices.”
