HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The City of Hopkinsville has received a grant totaling $19,075, from the KY Urban & Community Forestry Assistance to replace trees lost during the March 2023 windstorm.

Public Works Director, Mike Perry says there were over 100 trees damaged in Hopkinsville on city public property, with even more being completely destroyed. “We estimate over 1,000 trees lost within city limits,” Perry told Christian County Now.

The grant will cover the planting of 63 trees which is scheduled to be done in late October or early November. In addition to restoring the city’s green spaces, the funding will also enhance shade in several city parks including Old Joe Mumford Park, New Joe Mumford, Cave Springs Cemetery, Riverside Cemetery, East 18th Street Park, Industrial Park, and 2nd Street Park.

In March 2023, the windstorm paired with heavy rainfall and widespread flooding caused numerous road closures throughout Christian County. Very strong winds occurred ranging from 50 to 70 mph, according to the archives of the National Weather Service.
