HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Literacy Council is raising money with onions. Their annual Onions for Literacy fundraiser is back where people can purchase a ten-pound bag of sweet Vidalia onions through March 30.

Money raised from the sales will help fund programs that the nonprofit holds throughout the year, all with the goal of promoting literacy in the community. This includes local spelling bees, community reader days, and partnerships with Men 2 Be for their Real Men Read program in Hopkinsville, among many other events.

The fundraiser began in 2o16 when the Literacy Council experimented with items to sell but ultimately landed on onions because, who doesn’t love onions?

Onions can be purchased on the Literacy Council website for $12 a bag, pick up locations will be set up for May. Find out more information about the programs they have to offer on the Literacy Council Facebook page.
