HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A Hopkinsville man was arrested for illegally camping at a warehouse building behind the welcome center at the Trail of Tears Park on McGowan Street.
On Friday, Feb. 14, Hopkinsville Police was dispatched to the Trail of Tears Welcome Center after a disc golfer called in, advising that a man was seen taking up residence in a warehouse. When officers arrived, they found a large tent set up inside, along with personal belongings scattered around the area. Human feces and urine spots were seen inside of the building, as well as a large amount of trash.
The 45-year-old suspect approached officers and admitted to living in the warehouse for the past two months. Police informed him that the property belonged to the city, and he was illegally camping. He was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary.
Due to the amount of waste found throughout the building, police say Public Works will be paying out of pocket for the future expenses of removing the mess.
