HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – This weekend the Christian County Tiger Band was highly awarded as they took the field for their first ever competition after consolidating the former Christian County and Hopkinsville High School.
The Murray State University’s Festival of Champions was held on Sept. 19, with over 200 students in the new Tiger Band competing in the Class 5A category. Against 11 other high schools in the region, they took home the following awards with only .1 points between them and the first-place Reserve Grand Champion.
- 1st Overall Best Percussion
- 1st Overall Best Brass
- 1st Overall Best General Effect
- 2nd Reserve Grand Champion
“In their very first competition as the new CCHS Tiger Band, these students competed at the highest level and came within less than one point of taking the entire competition,” said a public statement from the CCHS Tiger Band. “This is what the beginning of a legacy looks like. New school. New uniforms. New traditions. One Tiger Band.”
During the competition they debuted their New Kids on the Block showcase, where students played a fun, upbeat music selection that includes hits from the 90s. Band Director Anthony Darnall previously told Christian County Now that the showcase was designed to be both entertaining for the community, exciting for the band, and unique within the competition landscape.
To prepare for the season, the band revealed the new Christian County High School’s fight song before the school year, which will set the tone at football games and events for years to come. Community members can watch the showcase for themselves at Stadium of Champions home games.
