OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver publicly opened up about recent health struggles during a city council meeting, sharing that she has been diagnosed with cancer.
“On July 5, I was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt, and I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” said Oliver at the Aug. 5 meeting. “I don’t know what my future holds.”
Oliver had recently been absent from public meetings, including city council and committee of the whole throughout the month of July prior to this statement. With the general election coming up in November, Oliver is currently on the ballot and plans to seek re-election against four other candidates.
“I promise every citizen of Oak Grove that if there’s ever a time I feel that I can’t fulfill my job as a mayor, I will step down,” she added. “But until then, I hope everyone has patience, understanding that it’s scary. But, this too shall pass.”
According to Oliver, she is meeting with additional doctors within the week which will determine her course of treatment moving forward. Throughout this process, she will continue to serve in her role as mayor, asking for thoughts and prayers.
