HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The City of Hopkinsville is now accepting applications from residents of Ward 8 who are interested in filling a vacancy on Hopkinsville City Council. Potential candidates will be taking over the seat of Councilmember Seth Meek, who resigned from his position effective March 17.

The council now has 30 days chose a replacement. If they fail to do so, it would be left up to the Governor to fill the seat. City Clerk Brittany Byrum told Christian County Now that the vacancy is a result of Meek moving. He was not a registered candidate in the November 2026 election.

“Citizens who reside in Ward 8 and are interested in serving their community on Hopkinsville City Council are encouraged to apply,” said a statement from the City of Hopkinsville. “This is an opportunity for residents to take an active role in local government and help shape the future of Hopkinsville.”

What this means for upcoming election

A chosen candidate will fulfill the current city council term that will expire on Dec. 31. City Attorney Doug Willen confirmed that candidates who are currently on the ballot for Ward 8 are able to apply and simultaneously continue their campaign. Republican Stephen Crisp and Democrat Tiffany Pittman are both registered candidates for Ward 8 in the November election.

Willen explained that if a resident who is not a candidate applies and is sworn in, they would only hold the seat for this term and would have to file as an independent if they chose to be added to the ballot this fall.

“It will be very interesting,” said Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight during the March 17 city council meeting. Willen added that the following procedure is what the city has followed every time there is a vacancy since 2008.

How to apply for Ward 8 city council seat

Applications from candidates are due to the City Clerk’s office on March 27. After that, councilmembers will be able to review the candidates’ applications. On April 7, during a public meeting, applicants will have a chance to speak on why they should hold the seat, and councilmembers will be able to ask questions.

Each councilmember will voice their preferred candidate during the meeting and the applicant with the most votes will immediately be sworn in.
